“Let Go” is a track in BTS’ third Japanese album, Face Yourself that was released in April 4, 2018.
I love the melody that evokes a bittersweet goodbye to something or someone very dear. A lover taking leave; a mother watching her grown up child walk away from home; a friend giving you a tight hug then swiftly turning towards the waiting train bound for the city.
“Before we say goodbye, let go
But I'm lost in the maze of my heart
From stereo to mono
That's how the path splits, it continues”
How it speaks of contradictions and the paradox of life. To keep love alive, it requires space. Time apart is needed for perspective taking and gaining back agency. In between time and space is trust. And faith - the belief that everything is going to be alright.
Jhope’s verses has two lines in the song asserting the difficult choice of letting go.
“Life without you is really unbelievable
But even so I still gotta go”
Ah, it is a reality that all of us must accept.
How apt that the album’s title is “Face Yourself”. Is it any easier to face oneself, flaws, fears and the uncertainty of it all after learning about self love? Maybe not. But Bangtan has been teaching ARMY to be brave. There is leave taking, but also there is the courage to look to the future that is yet to come.
The vocal line gives comfort at the song’s bridge.
“The color of the sky we saw together
The scent of the path we walked down together
Don't forget them”
Let go, for now, as each of the Tannies embark for conscription. While they’re at it, in our most creative and constructive of ways, let’s keep the love alive till 2025!
