Bibliotherapy with Teachers and Librarians

I have to thank PAARL for inviting me last year to do a bibliotherapy workshop. It multiplied!

Last week, I did a bibliotherapy session for public school teachers during the Sa Aklat Sisikat-Petron Gurong Kaakbay Conference at Far Eastern University. I simulated a typical bibliotherapy session using Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. They were an emotional bunch. They were touched at the story of the tree who gave everything. A good number of teachers cried a lot reliving memories and experiences of giving and receiving, and learning how to love in the process. Afterwards, I gave an input on bibliotherapy especially tackling tips, models and samples of  implementation. To end the session, I did a run of book talks on books that can be used for bibliotherapy.

I worked on the same format and structure for the Philippine Association of School Librarians Inc. (PASLI) Summer Conference here in Baguio City. But librarians are a different lot. No tears. More laughter and a thankful heart. On May 19-20, PAARL has invited me once more to do another bibliotherapy workshop. This time around, I will focus on the role of librarians as bibliotherapist and present technical preparations to building a "well-being" collection.

Below is the PowerPoint presentation I have been using in all my bibliotherapy workshops.

Library Infotainment/Edutainment

I'm waiting for boarding time to my flight to Roxas City at 9.30 AM. I'll be joining the PAARL 's Summer Conference on Library Tourism and Hospitality as resource speaker on the topic of Library Infotainment/Edutainment. I have to admit that, so far, this topic is the most challenging topic I need to cover in my history as facilitator, resource person and lecturer on LIS (Library and Information Services). I enjoyed working on the module despite several revisions though. It's going to be fun, I hope.

For now, here is one of the three videos I will be using tomorrow. Its Arizona State University's the Library Minute. It's short, sweet and substantial. It's a perfect example of library infotainment/edutainment.

Filipino Librarian: Cora Nera, PAARL Awardee

Every now and then, I blog about Filipino Librarians who I meet in my journeys (literal and figurative). This time, I'm posting about one of the more popular and esteemed Filipino librarians in the country today -- Madame Cora Nera of the Board for Librarians (BFL).

Madame Cora Nera is conferred by the PAARL The Lifetime Achievement Award and naming her The 2010 Woman Achiever. Of course, her achievements are numerous. Her continued work in uplifting the profession to higher levels of excellence is evident in all corners and areas of library and information science locally and abroad. There is one thing I have to say about one of her achievements and this has nothing to do with libraries and librarians.

For one, I happen to know Madame Nera's son, Jack. He's a spitting image of his mother. He's one of those simple guys in the office who quietly goes about his work but whose insights and perspectives are like windows and doors to new worlds. Best of all, he writes and loves to read. Now that is what I call an achievement.

Congratulations to Madame Cora Nera for her achievements as librarian, mother and woman! Mabuhay!

CPE* Provider

The Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians Association (PAARL) is pretty pleased and proud to have been honored by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) as an offical Continuing Professional Education (CPE) provider for Filipino Librarians. This means that participants attending their fora, seminars and workshops will automatically earn CPE points necessary when renewing one's license.

PAARL has been officially certified by the members of the CPE Council of
the Professional Regulatory Board for Librarians chaired by Hon.
Elizabeth R. Peralejo as a CPE provider for three (3) years from
2009-2011. This forthcoming seminar entitled "Librarians at their
Best: Envisioning and Realizing Multilevel and Progressive Readers
Services" which will be held at the Lyceum of Aparri, Cagayan Valley
from April 29 to May 1, 2009 has been approved and given 20 credit
units.

Please hurry and make your reservations soon if you want to be assured
of accommodation and transportation. Call or email Christopher Paras at:
09287960744 Email: paras.christopher@ gmail.com
mailto:paras.christopher@ gmail.com

This goes to show that PAARL lives up to its commitment in pursuing high professional standards for its members and for raising the bar among LIS professionals at large. Very soon, I hope, the Philippine Librarians Association Incorporated (PLAI) and the rest of the library organizations in the Philippines would follow suit. Unless there exist a set of requirements for a professional association to become an accredited CPE provider.

As in all things in this world, there's another side to the story. It is worth hearing how PAARL was able to achieve this feat.
