Teaching and Learning Research Skills: Philo Book Bingo Activity

One of the library services I am always excited to work on every academic year is the preparation and the design of Pathfinders and/or a virtual classroom library for specific subject areas. Even before the lockdown, library work for me consisted of working closely with subject teachers to support them with resources essential in extending learning and deepening the appreciation of curiosity, opening opportunities for skills building along the way.

Having met our Philosophy teacher at the onset of the school year, I designed a reading bingo card for her class. I was overwhelmed by the coverage of the content. My co-teacher's openness to show me her unit plan and learning goals set me on the path to focus and funnel the skills and topics into a bingo card that can be played during asynchronous sessions.

I thought about combining the concept of a Pathfinder and incorporating basic research skills into the Philo Book Bingo card.
As you can see, the bingo card has a link to World Book Online and the library's OPAC. I also included access to the EBSCO ebook high school collection and the Philosophy Resource Center of World Book Online.

I selected links to podcasts, picked a video on Crash Course, included reading into writing activities and incorporated doodling and drawings as ways to study and remember concepts learned in online class. I had fun making this!

As of writing, I have yet to hear from my co-teacher of the plans and instructions she set up for class. Definitely, I wish to hear feedback from her soon!

Pathfinder: The Abrahamic Faiths

The BA LIBRARY

Reference and Readers Services

A Pathfinder serves as a resource and guide for the researcher to locate and find specific information on a topic. It provides basic resources to help the researcher start off on the course of his/her research. It lends a way to organize and document sources so that the researcher can decide on the next of the research. It lends opportunity to plan research strategies and anticipate dead ends.

A Pathfinder can also be treated as a working bibliography, especially for short term research projects like reports, essays that require students to respond critically on a topic or unit of study, presentation slides and reflective articles.

How is information organized in a Pathfinder?

A Pathfinder contains a list of information sources -- subjects and topics, specialized sources ranging from primary to secondary sources in a variety of formats (print, online and audiovisual), databases and websites, bibliographies, agencies and institutions where information can be collected such as local and academic libraries.

Pathfinder: Abrahamic Faiths: Islam and Christianity

This Pathfinder is prepared for Ms. Roxas’ CRE class specifically for sources on the Abrahamic Faiths, namely Islam and Christianity.

Key words: Abrahamic Faiths, Islam, Christianity, characteristic of Islam, characteristic of Christianity, God, monotheism, women and Islam, women and Christianity, Islam and family life, Islam and society, Christianity and family life, Christianity and society

Pathfinder: Copyright and Creative Commons for School Librarians and Teachers

Because teachers have started creating and producing learning modules and materials for flexible learning, discussions on ethical considerations on the use of content, media and technology in social media abound. Educators, lawyers and information professionals have organised webinars on intellectual property and copyright issues. When I was a guest in empowerED last Saturday July 4, 2020, Jim Tuscano, teacher and host of the online panel, asked me about copyright since we were knee deep into talking about creating and developing learning materials.

I remember giving broad and generalised statements about it. So, to extend and expand our collective knowledge on the issue, here is a Pathfinder on Copyright and Creative Commons. Putting this resources and websites together is but a beginning to what can develop and grow into an online collection for teachers and school librarians especially.

Pathfinder: Copyright and Creative Commons for School Librarians and Teachers
Keywords: copyright, intellectual property, academic honesty, creative commons

Philippine Copyright and the Intellectual Property Rights

Copyright and the Intellectual Property Rights in the Philippines - an easy to understand infographic with a link to the Plazo & Associates Law website where Republic Act 8293 - The Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines can be read entirely.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPO) - this is the official website of the IPO and its contents vary from the easy to understand to the more complex legal speak of RA 8293. It also has web portals for researchers, artists, authors and content creators, entreprenuers, inventors and industrial designers to guide them through registration, documentation and coding of their works. This is a government website, so there are materials that are free for use and downloads. It has an array of interesting articles too that highlight the creativity and ingenuity of the Filipino.

COPYTALK: Copyright in the Academe, in Libraries and the Language of the Law - a webinar by the Central Philippines University that you can watch over at YouTube. It is three hour long. You might need a snack and a break in between. It has very informative content and helpful for librarians to know as they scale these principles according to the context of their learning communities.

For copyright licensing and registration, visit the FILCOLS and the National Library of the Philippines' Copyright Registration Office. The former is an organization of lawyers, artists, creatives and educators who are assisting the industry to promote and observe the implementation of RA 8293. The later is where artists and creators go to have their works, especially books, registered with an international book number. It makes the work and its creators legit.

To know more about Creative Commons, visit the website for detailed explanation of the different licenses, how sharing and collaboration of content can happen with respect and responsibility between parties. For teachers and school librarians, Kathleen Morris has an article with free posters on copyright and creative commons for downloads.

These are all for now. Visit the blog for more updates!

Pathfinder: Blended Learning

Pathfinder: EdTech, Instructional Design and Blended Learning
The BA Library received a request from the MYP Coordinator  on Blended Learning. We came up with a Pathfinder focusing on the topic and related subjects and disciplines.

The provision of curated content and the selection of sources for your class, learning resource packs, professional readings, personal growth and development are services that the BA Library facilitates. You can send your request for assistance via email (teacherlibrarian@beaconacademy.ph) or Workchat. I can also facilitate a one-on-one session for you or for your class if needed. Content curation involves skills in locating, accessing, organizing and documenting sources. It may come in handy when working on long essays and research projects.

BONUS information: EBSCOHost and World Book Online both have curation apps embedded in their portals and e-learning platforms.

Key words: blended learning, online learning, instructional design, educational technology, internet teaching

Keeping a diary or a journal has many benefits. It helps clear the mind and sort out feelings especially in times of confusion and worry. It is a way to record moments and milestones that become one’s personal history leading to a better knowledge of one’s self. Furthermore, it is our way of looking at ourselves against a bigger event or phenomenon as it happens until we call it history.
The #ourcoronadiary project is anchored on these concepts and ideals. Visit the website and discover the creative and varied ways to keep a diary or journal in difficult or less challenging times.
