Filipino Librarian of the Month: Rochelle Salonga-Silverio

Working as a librarian for more than nine years now, the Valenzuelano blogger, mom of a bubbly kid, and miniature pinscher enthusiast describes librarianship as one exciting field. “It is very dynamic. Like a well loved adventure book, you just cannot wait to know what is on the next page. ” She says. Let us learn more about Rochelle Salonga-Silverio, our Filipino librarian this month of May.

Rochelle Silverio graduated cum laude at the University of the Philippines Diliman and has also completed her MLIS there in 2011. At present, she is the head librarian of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela and is a lecturer at UP-SLIS. You will find her writing about life as a Valenzuelano at the One Valenzuela blog.

1. What's your lib story? Describe how you made the choice of majoring in LIS and what college life was like for you as an LIS major. You can cite challenging stories and success stories while studying the course.

A: I first entered the University of the Philippines as a student of Occupational Therapy. I believe that during that time, my Tatay’s medical condition then influenced me to sign up in the course. After two semesters and a field exposure in summer, I realized that the medical field was not for me. Among the courses open then was the Bachelor of Library and Information Science of ILIS (now SLIS). After my initial talk with Prof. Rosalie Faderon, I knew from then on that I am destined to be a librarian.

My parents respected and supported my decision to take the course. College life went on smoothly. Mabait akong estudyante. I guess the only minor hitch that I encountered then was a missing grade in a particular non-LIS subject. I even had to go to the professor’s house because she was not in the best of health. Naabutan ko pa siya na naka-dextrose! Good thing, she still had my grade. I could have repeated the subject.

Yet not all roads run smooth. My Nanay was diagnosed with cancer a few months before I took the licensure examination. I vividly remember how I did my final review at her room in PGH during the 2 day examination. Though she is fighting her own battle then, she still made it a point to be there for me. I consider that as the biggest hurdle that I had. Learning that I got the highest score a few days after is the icing on the cake.

2. What has been the greatest challenge you've faced so far as a licensed and working librarian? Why do you say it's a challenge?

A: Many librarians might agree with me that financial limitations would make it to the upper end of their daily challenges. It is a challenge since you have to do more with less. Some might just give up and say “kulang ang budget eh”. In my point of view, this type of idea enables one to think. It makes you more ingenious on how to carry out a certain plan or activity.

As Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity”.

3. What is your area of expertise in LIS?

A: I am a forever fan of children and young adult literature! During my college days, I used to foresee myself in a school library. I worked in a private school right after I graduate. Masayang kasama ang mga bata! Yet with the idea of paying back to the city that I have been living in for almost three decades now and in consideration of proximity of my home to the workplace, I opted to become a college librarian in a local university in Valenzuela. Though I had to leave the school library scene, I still make it a point that we acquire materials on children’s literature since the university offers Elementary Education. To add, I also got a growing personal collection at home, which I share with my daughter. After I got my MLIS, UP SLIS gave me the opportunity to teach children’s literature.

I can say that you can count on me in the areas of library management, cataloging, and children’s literature.

4. What do you think are the requirements and preparations necessary for becoming a LIS professional?

A: “I thought that the librarian profession was among the easiest.” a comment a new acquaintance told me as we were discussing our jobs. I still meet people who still do not know that librarians need to undertake board examination and those who still think that our work is just limited to guarding books. Though various campaigns and activities held in the librarianship field had helped change such views, I guess many still hold these ideas about the profession.

Other than taking the library science course, passing the licensure examination, and having that innate characteristic of wanting to search for answers, I believe you have to have the spirit to be an LIS professional. You should have the fortitude to show that you are not “just” a librarian.

5. What rewards have you reaped from being a LIS professional?

A: Just like many of our colleagues in the field, I have received a lot of blessings. I have been given commendations; met a number of authors and illustrators; taught and shared what I love; and travelled to quite a number of places.

But I guess the best rewards that I have ever received from being an LIS professional are genuine compliments from library patrons whom I have helped with their searches. Knowing that I have made their lives a bit easier by finding answers to their questions is, as the familiar photo commercial says, definitely priceless.

Belated Happy Birthday to SLIA!

April was like a whirlwind romance. I am still catching my breath from the excitement and stress brought by domestic and family events from last month.

While I've managed to stay sane, in God's mercy, some regular routines need to be put aside. One of these is my regular blogging duties. Anyways, making fifteen posts last month is not really bad considering the circumstances.

So, I celebrate this blog's ninth birthday! Looking forward to my tenth year of blogging!

The 8th iBlog Summit

I still remember the first iBlog Summit I attended in 2005. The following year, I was a speaker presenting a topic on blogs in education. How time flies! How far has Pinoy blogging gone since then?

I am being maudlin all over. Here is the link of the presentation I gave in 2006 during the 2nd iBlog Summit. The title of my presentation was, Blogs as Teaching Tools.  The full paper can be read via this link: Blogs in Teaching and Learning.

Responsible Blogging

My blogging topic schedule has been disrupted by many events the past few weeks. I am staying true to my promise of setting eight blog posts to celebrate the blog's eighth birthday. So here's the first on responsible blogging, a lesson I have learned over the years.

Blogging has given me a voice. At the start, it was a shaky one. Unsure at one point and very opinionated at sometime. That was not good. If you want readers to believe you, your voice must not only be convincing. It should have conviction. Mean what you say and say what you mean. Readers will know when you're bluffing and when you're saying your ideas with all sincerity.

Having said these, what you want to communicate out there does not always have to be your opinion. Maybe you have an idea, a strong opinion on a topic but these have to be well established on facts and information. A personal belief is one thing. An unsupported opinion is another. Hold that opinion or personal idea for a while. Research. Investigate. Try out your hypothesis. Cite your sources. Do not claim what is not yours.

A blog is a media that does not undergo strict editing. So, the blogger is his or her own editor. When I started blogging, there were no blog awards yet. But, there was the iBlog Conference in 2005 where influential bloggers came and gave talks, lectures and tips for beginning bloggers like myself. One unforgettable blogger in the group of speakers was Connie Veneracion. She was a living testament to responsible blogging. One memorable line she delivered then was this: "Our online persona reflects who we really are." That would mean, that despite a pen name or anonymity, we show our true selves when we blog.

Blogging can be fun. And yes, there's a promise of earning a bit of cash. But, the voice and the freedom of expression found in blogging must be taken with great responsibility.

Eight Insights on Blogging

So what have I taken from blogging after eight years? What benefits have the blog and blogging given me as a librarian and as a netizen? What learning experiences have I derived from blogging? These are some questions I played around in my mind in the wake of the blog's eighth anniversary. I have identified eight answers --
1. Blogging is a big responsibility
2. A blog is an investment
3. Blog identity and credibility count
4. Content is KING
5. Blogs, when used properly, can be gateways to learning
6. Blogging can increase the blogger's professional network
7. Blogs can be used to raise funds and to pursue an advocacy
8. Blogs are nifty tools to self publishing
Each will be explained and expounded in the coming days!

SLIA: Going Great @ 8!

Today marks the eighth year anniversary of the blog. School Librarian In Action was born in 2005. To this day, I thank Von Totanes, the blog's "ninong" (godfather), for egging me to step out of the dark and explore the blogosphere. It has been a wild and successful ride. For the next few days, until the month ends, I will be posting eight blogging milestones of School Librarian In Action.

And while I go back to memory lane, brushing off online dusts from the blog's archive, I found an article written by Ronald Lim about my blogging exploits way back in 2006. Here is the link of the full article, Meet the Blograrian, which was featured in Manila Bulletin on 1 October 2006.

I remember being interviewed by Ronald Lim after my talk on blogging for librarians at the Manila International Book Fair. I was, at the time, blogging for over a year and the experience was exhilerating, like I was on uppers. Now I can say that, way back in 2006, I was professionally hungry. In the article, I was quoted as saying --

"I wanted a venue for my voice to be heard. I wanted to communicate with other people," she explains. "Librarianship is a very lonely and routinary profession. I’m not satisfied with my interaction with my fellow teachers and students. I wanted to have a wider reach."

Blogging has been, and still is, giving me opportunities to grow professionally and personally. I will expound on this in another post. But, as Mr. Lim wrote in the article --

Gagatiga says that maintaining her blog has empowered her like never before. When before she couldn’t understand how to manipulate HyperText Mark-up Language (HTML) — the codes needed to manipulate and maintain a website and a blog — she has now steadily increased her knowledge, and through her blog, has been able to reach people willing to teach her.

I have reached out to many and developed a professional network and online presence that would have been impossible if I stayed an anonymous blogger.

Lastly, I learned how to manage my time for blogging as well. Indeed, time and technology can be managed. Being constantly online is pretty cool and yes, it connects me to the world but there's also a world I need to connect with first and foremost: my self's own world and my family's. I said in the article --

"When I was just starting out, I almost let my blog run my life," she explains. "If I didn’t have kids, I would have been addicted. Just after I’d post, I’d wait for comments to show up. And if I happen to post at school, by the time I’d arrive at home, I’ll connect to the internet and check the comments I have."

Now, I know better. I still blog and with eight years blogging experience, I can say I am blogger who has grown wiser.

Some Blogging Success

Just a note to share with my readers.

This September, the blog has been presented with opportunities for growth and networking. Neal-Schuman sent a press release of a new book on 21st Century Literacy which found its way in the blog. Artspace of New Haven Connecticut has invited me to contribute in an online exhibit on personal libraries and top shelf reads. More on that in the coming months. Yeng Remulla, writer of Productive Pinoy has sent me a copy of his book for review. I am reading it at the moment and, of course, will blog about it before the month ends.

Lastly, the blog got another paid link ad. Check the Network and Connection feature at the left and there you'll find the link!

Some indicators of blogging success. I'm one little happy blograrian these days!

Blogsights: Web 2.0 Reflections

From Joeper -

The Web 2.0

It’s always very exciting to learn new things.  The good things about free seminar workshop are that you are learning new things at no cost. I love to accept such invitations. I believe in my life motto “opportunity knocks only once”, grab it while it’s hot.

Media is everywhere and doesn’t sleep, many scientist and innovators continue researching for new things and advancements. We need to go with the flow or else we will be left behind. Information nowadays is so easy to access by means of Internet. This present generation is almost close to paperless generation. You can have information in a device called computer and even on handheld computing devices. These information can be carried anywhere in your community or around the globe.

Information on the web is a great help to mankind. To know information about places even when you aren’t there, you can feel the ambience of that place. You don’t need a bundle of books to trace the history of our grandfathers. You can promote businesses for less advertisement fees.

The web is a giant on air. Without leaving home, you can share ideas, personal experiences and opinions to your relatives and to the people that you know. Sharing information, giving tips and tricks and making some announcements are moving fast in the information superhighway and delivered it right into your computer in few seconds.

Now it’s time to plug and connect our wireless brain to face the new challenge and a new way of income generator. Earning without leaving the comfort of your home is the best. Let’s make a blog and socialize in online networking.

One participant wished to remain anonymous --

Web 2.0 Technology

Web 2.0 technology is very important to people especially for the librarians because by means of these there’s an interaction between the user and the provider of information. With the help of the technology and media, we are now more aware and updated into the advancement of different technologies. They give us enough knowledge and skills especially in communication skills. We can communicate with the other libraries and ask what are the new trends we have now that can really help us and also to our valued users. Through this web 2.0 technology, example is blog/blogging; we can now gain insights or thoughts of different topics in different places. But creating a blog is not an easy task, although we can do it by ourselves, we should have to know how to manage our time and control the limit. Before we share the information to the users, as a librarian we should have enough knowledge and have patience in sharing information.

Note from SLIA: Reflections (previous posts and current ones) by participants are posted in its unedited versions.

More Blogsights: Web 2.0 Tech Focusing on Blogs and Blogging

Bilang librarian o library staff maraming bagay tayong kailangang isaalang-alang:

-       Time (time management)
-       Being Responsible
-       Considering ethics
-       Environment (institution or individual)
-       Resources

From Paula Crescini --

As I browse one of the blogs about the Coffee Goddess, I feel so great that there was a prayer for our Maguindanao people who were victims of massacre last year. For me it is of great help, since it is a prayer intended for them, if a million browse and read that blog, then there are millions who prayed for them. Hope their souls are all in peace.

With regards to Philippine news and history, I browsed the Visconde Massacre where I was not able to get through it by the time it was happened before. I don’t have resources to follow the story and how it happened, but through the inquirer.net blog, I was then able to read the past and up-to-date story about that.

About Feathers in the Wind blogs, it gave me an idea to share how am I became a Librarian and also to give back the gratitude to my benefactor, the Peace Corps Alumni Foundation for Philippine Development. The foundation gave me the opportunity to fulfill my dream.

Blogging really involves communication. It is also one way of sharing your ideas and thoughts and especially the gratitude if you don’t have time to talk with those who you wanted to thank for.
Sharing small ideas with will really help some people to lighten their burden, if you share the word of God that give you strength and proven and seen to you. As a blogger you really is of great help to other.

Blogsights: Web 2.0 Technology - A Focus on Blogging

Here are two more reflections from participants of the Web 2.0 seminar-workshop I conducted last November 26, 2010 at the De La Salle University, Dasmarinas, Cavite.

        From Khatlyn Grace Alcedo -

Web 2.0 technology is very important to people especially for the librarians because by means of these there’s an interaction between the user and the provider of information. With the help of the technology and media, we are now more aware and updated into the advancement of different technology.
They give us enough knowledge and skills especially in communication skills. We can communicate with the other libraries and ask what are the new trends we have now that can really help us and also to our valued users. Through this web 2.0 technology, example is blog/blogging; we can now gain insights or thoughts of different topics in different places.
But creating a blog is not an easy task. Though we can do it by ourselves, we should have to know how to manage our time and control the limit of postings. Before we share the information to the users, as a librarian we should have enough knowledge and have patience in sharing information.

From Cholita Clico --

WEB 2.0 Technology was so interesting and knowledgeable to all readers. This technology can give us a lot of information about many things such as giving tips, advertising, posting informative pictures and etc.  That’s why through this technology we can explore our imagination and develop our creativity to produce reliable information and pass this to other users.

With regards to the discussion about “Blog and Blogging “I noticed and I learned that creating a blog is not an easy task to do. It needs a lot of time to study and determine what topic or information you are going to blog in your blogging website.  We are also responsible with the information we’re posting in the blog because we always observe ethics and that’s good for the users.

Thank you very much for today’s seminar-workshop for keeping me in touch about learning the Web 2.0

Loving lovealibrarian.blogspot.com

What a pleasant news I got this morning from Cate Newton of Guide to Online Schools. They love my library blog that it is included in their list of Top 50 Librarian Blogs. If anything, it gives me all the reason to continue blogging. An enormous and eternal thank you to Von Totanes for inspiring me to leave the shadows of blogging anonymity and to courageously embrace the light!

Here's what people in Guide to Online Schools said about SLIA --

School Librarian in Action comes from a Philippine librarian who blogs about books, conferences, his personal interests, and more.

Paolo Chikiamco, writer and blogger, is posting a series of my interview via his blog, Rocket Kapre. It's a three-part feature that chronicles my life, so far. I feel so old and institutionalized. Haha! Then again, it's just me.

The first part appears today. Click the links!

Impressive

The news is so flattering!

This blog is included in Walt Crawford's book, But Still They Blog,, that presents how liblogs has changed and evolved since 2007. Crawford has posted a sample data of what to find and expect in his book via his blog, Walt at Random. Clicking this link, you'd see this blog's profile based on Crawford's survey/study. What's more, he described this blog as "impressive". Probably due to its "reaction" lines? I hope it's for the over all impact.

If anything, this bit of good news will encourage me to keep on blogging!

Happy 5th Anniversary to SLIA

School Librarian In Action (SLIA) will celebrate it's 5th blog anniversary on April 19, 2010. The date being its birth in the blogosphere. On this note, I have the following blog activities and series of posts lined up in celebration of the blog's anniversary.

Picture! Picture! is a wordless post on topics that SLIA is known for and more. A picture paints a thousand words, so they say. What will make this exciting is that, it is open for readers to interpret and to write about. Guidelines will follow! And yes, dear readers, there will be prizes!

Yan Ang Pinay! will be re-resurrected as well as its banners and logos. In its original intent, Yan Ang Pinay will feature Filipino women who excel in their field of expertise and discipline. The characteristics of Pinays in Philippine Children's Literature will also regain a regular posting.

There will be an advice column entitled Dear Librarian beginning next week. Over the years, I would receive email messages asking for opinion and advice. It's about time I do something about it in light of Web 2.0 and knowledge management. What's more, I will invite colleagues from the profession who can offer their opinion and advice on the issue or topic discussed.

We'll see how far these blog activities will go. But for now, I thank you all who have supported my blog and are continuously doing so! Special mention goes to Von Totanes of Filipino Librarian. If not for his influence and inspiration, I would not have dared to venture into the blogosphere.

SLIA's Unforgettable Posts of 2009

2009 was a breakthrough year for me as a blogger. After four years of blogging, SLIA finally earned revenues! It's not so big that I could afford quitting work. At the end of a blogging day, it's the content that matters really. The earning is icing on the cake.

So here's a list of some unforgettable posts I made in 2009. Note that the choices are all mine and it does not make the BESTs of the year. That would be harder to decide on so I'm giving myself time for that. Meanwhile, let's journey back to SLIA's 2009.

January
The QuestVon and Peachy were in town for a brief homecoming. It was also the month when Von joined Deal or No Deal and won some big cash!

February
The Butterfly Award SLIA's second blog award! Another one came around in September of 2008 where SLIA won an honest 2nd place.

March
Write An Essay Get a Gift CheckSLIA's first writing contest as inspired by a talk I had at the UP FLIPP congress.

April

June
Aklatan ni MikaMy first storytelling session in a halfway house for kids afflicted with cancer. This experience has to be the most unforgettable so far.

July
PBBY Luncheon for South African StorytellerGcina Mhlope-Becker is a miracle on two legs! Her visit and performances were truly amazing!

August
Three posts made it to the list for the month of August. Carlo Caparas made quite a stir accepting the award as National Artist for Visual Arts. In Qualifying the Unqualified I made a stand for what I believed was a mockery. Good thing that Philippine Chidlren's Literature is a buzz with new books being launched left and right. It got featured in One Shot while I wrote about Dr. Luis Gatmaitan's contribution to the industry in the said blog program.

By the end of the month,The Manila International Storytelling Festivalcommenced. I was enthralled. Thus I realized, as a storyteller, I have so much to learn!

September
SLIA has shown its age as it was mentioned in a news article,Good PR for Filipino Librarians", along side Von Totanes' esteemed and high brow Filipino Librarian.

October
2009 was a trying year since it gave us Ondoy to contend with. But I survived and got by with a lot of help from friendsMany Thanks to everyone who sent their prayers, financial help and moral support.

And of course, the Collaboration With Dianne de Las Casaswas a pleasant surprise! Life is indeed a roller coaster ride.

November
Two months before 2009 folded up, I came full circle. InCompleting Life CyclesI touched based with a former student and made connections with my Alma Mater.

December
To close the year, I gladly accepted PAASCU'sThe Fr. James Meany Award. One of the many things to remind me that I have done something right.

SLIA 2009: In Review

In view of a blogging tradition, I'm posting 2009's monthly first post. This is not the blog's best of 2009 but I hope to do one right after New Year's day. It's more like a mirror or a glimpse to how my blogging life had been in the year that shall come to pass.

December
The Philippine Board On Books For Young People (PBBY) had an early Christmas party at Nina Lim-Yuson's lovely home in Makati.

November
The launching of the Crucible-KUTING Art Stories for Children series will be held on November 17, 2009, 3-5pm at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Makati City.

October
I would like to thank the following people for extending an arm and a leg on my call for help –

September
I've heard a lot of things about the Lopez Museum, its famed library and its collection cum vault of rare books and documents.

August
Corazon Aquino, the heart and soul of the original People Power died today at 3AM after more than a year's battle with colon cancer.

July
I have been terribly busy the past two weeks and to break this bit of news after a blogging hiatus in this blog is not very good at all. But news, good or bad, must be known to all. We are, still, in a democracy.

June
Sometime in 2006, I had a telephone conversation with Lizanne Alcazaren who runs Aklatan ni Mika, a children's library in a halfway house for children with cancer.

May
I've been running a series of teacher training seminars for the past weeks and I will fly to Donsol, Sorsogon for yet another teacher training seminar sponsored by CEMEX and Sa Aklat Sisikat this week.

April

Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), after surveying hundreds of public school children all over the country (with the significant help of Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation), unveiled the 25 Best-Loved Children’s Book Characters Exhibit by Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang InK).

March
This collection of posts in this blog from 2006 is long overdue.

February
This is juicy.

Januray
For the past two years, I have been posting the monthly first posts of the past year at the beginning of the new year.

Happy New Year! Thank you so much for the love and support for this blog!
