About the NCBA Kids' Choice Award

Around mid-August, I received some questions from Ms. Neni Sta. Romana Cruz on the awarding of the Kids Choice Awards last July. Here is our brief exchange on the awards. If anything there is plenty to talk about the KCA which I hope to do with our school library people soon!

Why is it important to have a Kids' Choice? 

For children to be able to make choices on books and reading materials is an act of freedom. It is empowering to exercise this choice. When kids read the book of their choice, they have agency. Of course, the selections come from an industry who love children and whose passion for books and reading is genuine. As a literacy coach and teacher, I have observed how engaged my students are in learning challenging comprehension skills when they read a text of their choice.


How were the child judges chosen? 

This year, PBBY and NBDB partnered with Teach for the Philippines in choosing kid judges. 

What are their ages?  

They are children in the elementary grades. The first criterion in selecting kid judges is that they must be readers.

Don't their titles coincide with Best Reads?

No. And I am glad :-) So much to learn from children!

Virtual Author Visit at Lowell Elementary School, Chicago, Illinois

What technology can do! 

I had my first Author Meet and Greet this year with the kindergarten class of Ms. Rebecca Cotto and Ms. Genevie De Castro of Lowell Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. It was on Book Giving Day, February 14 in the US and 2am of February 15 Manila Time.

I had a wonderful chat with the students as they all responded eagerly to the stories I told them. My Daddy My One and Only is always a winner for this age group while I am Happy to Be Me opened a lot of insights about the self and the decisions we can make  to be a little kinder to ourselves. Even 6 year olds are able to grasp that idea. Amazing 🤩

Call for Digital Entries for the 2021 Alcala Prize

 2021 PBBY-Alcala Prize Rules

The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) is now accepting digital entries for the 2021 PBBY-Alcala Prize. The winner shall be given a cash prize of PHP25,000.00, a medal, and an opportunity to be published. Prizes will be awarded at a virtual ceremony to be held during the celebration of National Children’s Book Day on July 20, 2021.
DEADLINE
Entries must be sent to secretariat@pbby.org.ph, with the subject ALCALA2021, by June 4, 2021.
CONTEST RULES
1. The contest is open to all Filipino citizens except those who are related to any PBBY member up to the third degree of consanguinity.

2. Entries must be based on the 2021 PBBY-Salanga Prize winning piece, Ang Tahanang Hindi Tumatahan by Iza Maria Reyes. A copy of the story may be downloaded here--> https://drive.google.com/.../1H8eun67oMhbnu1pxRFe3B3.../view

3. All entries must be original, unpublished illustrations that have not won in any previous contest.

4. All entries must consist of three (3) illustrations that are of the same size, two of which are colored and in sequence. The third spread should be a rough sketch of any other spread. The artworks should be in 72 dpi. Contestants are free to determine how to distribute the text for their spreads, bearing in mind that the interaction of art and text is an important criterion of the contest.

5. All three artworks should be compiled in one PDF. The total size of the PDF should not exceed 5 MB. The PDF file name should follow the format: 2021ALCALA_YourPenName.

6. A contestant may send in more than one (1) entry.

7. Together with each entry, contestants must submit a document containing the contestant’s full name, address, contact numbers and a short literary background, as well as a statement from the author, vouching for the originality of the entry and for the freedom of the organizers from any liability arising from the infringement of copyright in case of publication, and affirming that the entry or any variant thereof has (a) never been published nor (b) won any other contest i.e. that it has never won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, honorable mention in any other contest or otherwise been awarded a medal, a citation, or included in a publicized list of meritorious entries to a literary contest. The file name should follow the format: YourName_Bio and YourName_StatementOfOriginality.

8. All entries must be sent to secretariat@pbby.org.ph by June 4, 2021.

Winners will be announced no later than June 30, 2021.

Update on Book Project: Ino the Invincible

When I was still a librarian in Xavier School, I was inspired to write about boys and basketball. There was a group of grade 7 boys who were always in the library, hanging out, reading and borrowing the newest titles that the Grade School Learning Resource Center offered. They were a smart and frisky bunch. As their grade level librarian, I get invited to their games, activities and programs. These boys inspired me to write a short story about friendship, sportsmanship and growing up.

Lampara House is once again publishing this story, Ino the Invincible. This is a book project in collaboration with visual artist, Jonathan Ranola. While making the studies of the book's illustrations, Jonathan told me he has a cousin who went to Xavier School who happened to be a former student. Small world!

Boys and Basketball

Ino the Invincible is for my boy, Nico, Xaverian and now an ISKO, and for the GS batch of 2003 who were so open to learning new things! The book is also my homage to Inigo of Loyola. We hope to have this book launched in September of this year in time for the Manila International Book Fair.

Isang Harding Papel A Martial Law Musical: Interview With Nanoy Rafael (2 of 2)

Narito ang part 2 ng interbyu kay Nanoy Rafael na nagsalin at nag-adapt ng Isang Harding Papel (Rivera, Joson, Adarna House 2015) bilang isang musical. Mababasa ang part 1 sa link na ito.

Sa part 2 ng interbyu, ibinahagi ni Nanoy Rafael ang malikhaing proseso ng pagsasalin ng orihinal na materyal ni Augie Rivera. Nakakatuwa ring malaman na kasama ni Nanoy ang kanyang mga co-teachers at kanilang mga mag-aaral sa Raya School sa paglikha ng musical na ito.

3. May mga piling mag-aaral ng Raya ang nakasama ninyo sa paglikha. Kumusta naman sila katrabaho?

Sa unang run, buong Grade 8 namin ang tumulong sa produksiyon. Bahagi na rin ng pagtuturo namin sa kanila kung paano ba magpatakbo ng isang produksiyon, para may mga taon na sila na mag-isa ang gagawa nito. Epektibong motibasyon ang agency, ‘yung bibigyan ka ng kalayaan na lumikha o gawin ang isang bagay ayon sa naiisip mo. Kaya naging ganado rin talaga ang mga estudyante sa paggawa. Sila ang bumuo ng marami sa props, ng marketing materials. May mga nasa logistics rin na tumulong magpatakbo ng backstage. At siyempre, mayroon rin akong mga katuwang sa pagsusulat.

May isang pangyayari na hindi ko makakalimutan kasama ang mga estudyante. Mga ilang araw pagkatapos ng eleksiyon, nagkita-kita kami para tapusin ang first draft ng script. Naaalala siguro ninyo na noong mga unang araw ng bilangan, lamang si Bongbong Marcos sa pagka-bise. Kabado kaming nag-uuusap, natatawa na sa kaba. Alam ng mga batang ito na noong panahon ng rehimeng Marcos, nakulong ang mga sumulat laban sa gobyerno. Natortyur ang iba. Nawala ang iba. Pinaslang ang iba. Kaya binibiro nila ako na “Hala, teacher, baka makulong ka!” Gumaganti naman ako ng “Bakit ako lang? Kasama kaya kayo.” Araw iyon na puno ng masasamang biro, at ang bilang sa eleksiyon ang pinakamasamang biro sa lahat.

Pero nagseryoso ako at tinanong sila kung gusto pa ba nilang ituloy ang pagsusulat kung sakaling manalo nga si Marcos bilang bise. Sinabi ko na maiintindihan ko kung hindi, at walang problema kung ganoon. Pero sumagot silang “Sige lang, tuloy lang!” nang walang pag-aatubili. Kaya saludo ako kina Cacy Abadeza, Sofia Baybay, Izzi dela Cruz,  at Ella Francia—mga katuwang sa pagsulat at mga nagbigay rin ng tapang sa akin na ituloy ang dula.

4. Ano ang nauna, musika o libretto?

May magandang dynamic kami ni Teacher Thea Tolentino (ang composer) sa paggawa ng mga kanta. Nauuna parati ang lyrics (at ang sitwasyon na kasama nito). Tapos mag-uusap kami ni Thea kung ano ba ang kuwento, ano ang bagay na lapat dito. 

Pero hindi pa buo ang libretto/script kapag ibinibigay ko kay Thea ang natatapos naming mga lyrics. May mga eksena na wala pang kanta, pero tapos na ni Thea na lapatan ng musika ang iba. Kaya rin marami-rami sa mga naisulat naming kanta ang naimpluwensiyahan rin ng nauna nang treatment sa musika.

Halimbawa, ang pinakanauna kong naisulat ay ang dalawang Oyayi. Kanta ito ni nanay habang pinapatulog si Jenny, at kanta ni Jenny habang pinapatulog ang sarili niya. Naisulat ko ito bandang Nobyembre. Bandang Disyembre noong narinig ko ang lapat dito ni Thea. Pagkatapos noon, saka ko naisulat ang titular song na Isang Harding Papel, kasi nagkaroon na ako ng idea kung paano ang “feel” dapat nito. 

5. Ano ang paborito mong eksena sa Hardin? Bakit ito ang paborito mo?

Ang hirap! Sige, lilimitahan ko sa dalawa.

Ang una ay ang Bagong Lipunan spoof. Paborito ko ito kasi ito yata ang pinakamasaya naming naisulat, at siguro pinaka-subversive rin. Paulit-ulit naming pinakikinggan ng writing team ang Bagong Lipunan, tapos nag-iisip lang kami kung paano bababuyin ng mga bata ang lyrics nito, sa paraang parang bata talaga. Ang dami naming ibinato sa isa’t isa na nakakatawa, kaya ang hirap ring tapusin. Pero ang pinakadumikit ay noong may kumanta ng “Mabahong ulam” kapalit ng “May bagong silang.” Tapos dere-deretso na naming naisulat. Kaya halimbawa, ‘yung “May bagong silang / May bago nang buhay / Bagong bansa...” naging “Mabahong ulam / Mabaho ang laman / Amoy paa...” Ang immature lang, di ba! Pero ganoon naman talaga noong bata tayo, kung ano-anong pambababoy ang ginagawa natin sa mga kanta. Tapos kapag napanood rin ninyo ito sa stage, dahil mga Grade 1 ang nasa eksena, bagay na bagay. Awtentikong awtentiko.

Yung ikalawang eksena na paborito ko ay ang torture scene. Wala ito sa script, at nagugulat pa rin ako na kayang ilagay ang ganitong sitwasyon at panatiliing pambata pa rin ang dula. Pero nagawa ni Direk Nor! Gustong-gusto ko ito kasi hindi ito metaporiko, na siyang madalas nating takbuhan kapag may gusto tayong ipaliwanag sa bata na sa tingin natin ay masyadong mabigat para sa kanila. Tahas ito, at mabigat pa rin (dahil mabigat naman talaga ang realidad na ito), pero mauunawaan ng bata. Nirerespeto ng eksenang ito ang kakayahan ng batang umunawa at magproseso, na magkaroon ng komplikadong mga damdamin at naiisip.

Si Nanoy Rafael ay isang manunulat, tagasalin, at guro. Nagwagi ang libro nila ni Serj Bumatay na "Naku, Nakuu, Nakuuu!" ng Peter Pan Prize mula sa IBBY-Sweden. Ilan sa mga isinalin niya patungong Filipino ay ang "Book Uncle and Me" ni Uma Krishnaswami, at ang "A Christmas Carol" ni Charles Dickens. Kasalukuyan siyang nagtuturo sa Raya School ng Filipino at Araling Panlipunan.

Aklat-pambatang tumatalakay sa mga di-kumbensiyunal at di-tradisyunal na pamilya ang Ang Ikaklit sa Aming Hardin (2012). Partikular nitong tinutuunan ang mga hámong hinaharap ng isang batang may dalawang nanay.


Tungkol sa mga Manlilikha

NAGSULAT
Nagtapos ng MA Filipino: Malikhaing Pagsulat si Bernadette Villanueva Neri sa UP Diliman at BA Mass Communication major in Journalism sa UP Baguio. Kumakatha siya ng mga kuwentong pambata, sanaysay, dula, at maikling kuwentong lesbiyana (na binansagan niyang “naratibô” o naratibo ng mga tibô). Kasalukuyan siyang nagtuturo sa UP Diliman, kasabay ng pagkuha ng duktorado sa Malikhaing Pagsulat sa parehong paaralan. Kasama niya ngayon sa bahay ang limang muning na tulad niya’y mahilig din sa ikaklit at iba pang mga halaman. 

GUMUHIT
Si CJ de Silva ay nakilala bilang Promil Kid sa mga commercial nito noong 90s. Ngayon, si CJ naman ang gumagawa ng mga patalastas bilang Art Director sa isang advertising agency. Hilig pa rin niya ang magpinta at gumuhit.

NAGSALIN SA INGLES
Nanay ng dalawang munting binibi si Jennifer del Rosario-Malonzo. Siya ay isang manunulat, editor, mananaliksik, at aktibista. Nag-aral siya ng peryodismo sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas at kasalukuyang nagtatrabaho sa isang internasyunal na organisasyon. Mahilig siya sa tula at potograpiya, at nait matutong maggitara.

NAG-LAYOUT
Si Jennifer T. Padilla-Quintos ay nanay ng dalawang masayahing batang sina Gaby at Joaquin. Isa siyang graphic artist, art teacher at manggagawang pangkultura. Nagtapos siya ng Fine Arts sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman.

Celebrate NCBD: Sandosenang Sapatos

I have reserved tickets for me and my family to a matinee show of Sandosenang Sapatos, a musical adaptation of Dr. Luis "Tito Dok" Gatmaitan's wonderful children's book. This is our way of celebrating the 30th National Children's Book Day. Our kids, Nico (16) and Zoe (12) have all grown up reading Tito Dok's books and Sandosenang Sapatos is a personal favorite. As a parent, I intend to direct them to another experience of literature of another form. The children's book they loved and read as little kids has been adapted into a musical.

What conservations we would have after seeing this musical!

I am excited for Tito Dok; for my kids to watch the musical; for the musical to take flight and soar! The hubby is looking forward to the show as well because Noel Cabangon, one of his favorite musicians, composed the music and directed it too.

The 2nd Filipino ReaderCon: United We Read

The 2nd Filipino ReaderCon: United We Read is on August 18, 2012 at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati City, held in partnership with Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL) and National Book Development Board (NBDB)

For details of the program, you can visit the site. Just click the highlighted link. What makes this different from last year's ReaderCon is the launching of the Filipino Reader' Choice Awards (FRCA). From the blog, the Filipino RCA seeks to

engage the Filipino reading public in honoring their favorite Philippine-published titles. An initiative of the Filipino Book Bloggers Group, the Filipino RCA was established to develop awareness and appreciation of Philippine literature; recognize the reader’s role in creating the meaning and experience of a literary work; and give the readers a voice in the Philippine book industry.
Nomination forms are available online. What I like about this award is that, it is the reader, or for this matter, the collective Pinoy reader who makes the choice. I'm excited to know who the winners will be in the categories that the organizers conjured:
  • Children’s picture book
  • Chick lit
  • Novel in English
  • Novel in Filipino
  • Comics / Graphic novels
  • Short story anthology
  • Essay anthology
  • Poetry 
 In light of this event, yes, I am delighted because readers should respond actively on the books and materials that they engage in and encounter. The exercise promotes thinking. Engagement in book discussions and book talks affect the creative process of book making. Then again, how I wish school librarians can also begin an activity like this. Or, perhaps, as "keepers" of books and information, school librarians can set up small book award events in their learning communities as a way to celebrate reading, bringing books closer to children and teens. 

SR Ranganathan's law, books are for use, stands on firm legs in this digital age.

Sol by Agay Llanera


On March 20, 2007 at the Ayala Museum, Agay Llanera, KUTING Secretary, will launch her second book, Sol via CANVAS. Illustrations by Farley del Rosario.

Agay Llanera is a fellow KUTING and sits in the executive board as secretary. This is her second published book. Read the story and the details of the launch here.

With one book launch after the other, Philippine Children's Literature is indeed alive and well.
