Breaking Barriers Philippine Blog Tour Featured Chapter: Round 5 Story: Love is Stronger than Hate

MJ Tumamac, teacher and award winning writer writes a chapter review for the Breaking Barriers Philippine Blog Tour. He chose Round 5 Story: Love is Stronger than Hate and relates this to a Filipino Young Adult novel, I Hate My Mother by Perpi Tionsgon (Cacho Publishing, 2009). He further connects this with  his own experiences growing up, and now, as a writer of middle grades and young adult stories he can use such insights for his writing and teaching craft.

Indeed, reading Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion by John Couret serves many purposes and lends valuable insights in more ways than one!

MJ is touched by John Couret's story as a parent to Victoria, his daughter. Their relationship was tested through a pregnancy at a time when Victoria is still learning to be. Any parent would spiral towards anger, but John Couret, the champion that he is, showed love. He is now a happy grandfather to Macci.

Sometimes, we see letting go and surrendering as acts of weakness. When done with love, it heals all wounds and cures all ills. In the end, all we need is love and love is all we need!

Breaking Barriers Philippine Blog Tour Featured Chapter: Chapter 8 Fighting Against All odds

I read Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion by John Couret at a time when I was taking a full recovery from my Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). It was a time when I was making sense of the healing process. I admit, I was very insecure then and to this day, I still have bouts of doubts. This is my personal struggle. It is real.

To some extent, doubts can be good. What I moderate and manage is the decline to complete and utter fear. As Yoda said in Star Wars: Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Life is too good to be lived in fear, anger and hate. My belief in the beauty and goodness of life was strengthened even more after reading John Couret's new book.

In Chapter 8, John Couret narrates his own struggle on dealing with serious health issues. He lost his sense of sight at a time when his career was picking up. He depended on friends and family to continue doing his daily routines. He gave up work for a while so he can heal. He was overwhelmed with these drastic changes that he was ready to throw in the towel. These same fears ate me up after my TIA. To read John Couret's journey and how he overcame his health issue was cathartic. In this particular chapter, I saw how John Couret humbled himself and reach out of the goodness of the universe. He recognized the workings of the Almighty in his life. Miraculously, he was healed. And he waited for eight months. What faith! What hope!

I imagine what those eight months must be like for John Couret. He must have slowed down. A lot! For a former boxer who led an active lifestyle, this must have been a big adjustment in all aspects of his being. But, he waited. In a time of struggle, waiting can be a great advantage.

Like John Couret, I am going to wait and to take small steps towards healing. Who knows, the physical healing I so desire will actually lead me to a healing of the whole self. What else could go wrong if the Almighty is in your corner? Keeping the faith and a positive attitude are the works of God. He is always on our side.

John Couret moves on in this chapter by telling the story of Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer who lost her arm from a shark attack. She did not give up surfing. She went on to better herself despite missing one arm. Like him, Bethany Hamilton has inner strength. I finish reading this chapter with the belief that I will get better. I will take small steps and wait.

In chapter 9, John Couret provides tips on building stamina. While a strong spirituality is essential for healing, one's mental state is just as important.  He gives the following advice in becoming stronger in mind and spirit. I have compressed them, but read the chapter in full to get its full benefits.

a. Breathe for centering and balance.
b. Meditate. To me, this means a passage from the scriptures: be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
c. Pray. That's all there is to it.
d. Exercise and decide what kind or method befits your current state of being.
e. Take control of your health. Listen to your body!
f. Tap into your creativity. Doing something creative is a big stress reliever.
g. Sleep. Turn off the lights. Dock electronic gadgets far from the bed.
h. Spend time on leisure activities.
As a whole, Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion is not only inspirational and motivational. It is also, moving. John Couret coaches you through the entire 5 rounds. It is a self help book, yes, and the training exercises at each round allows for self reflection, being aware of one's thoughts and actions and building communities along the way for a better, more empowered society.

We all need this book now. Let the lawmakers, politicians and technocrats do their job. And let us do ours by becoming our own heroes because, life will always deal with us with issues we can't fully grasp. Then again, we can rise above these issues if we are whole, if we are strong enough because God is on our side!

Breaking Barriers PH Blog Tour: Book Review of Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion

Jord Irving Gadingan wrote a book review of Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion by John Couret (Write Hook Media, LCC, 2016) in Filipino. He provides a comprehensive review, including his process of reading the book and his approach in reviewing it. He identifies five things he learned from reading Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion.

Of the five things he learned, here are three things said in Filipino:
Makinig.
Tapusin agad.
Maag-laga.

Who is John Couret?

John Couret is the President and CEO of Write Hook Media, LLC, a start-up social entrepreneurial publishing and consulting company. He is an author of Breaking Barriers: How to Knock Out Adversity and Live Life as a Champion, a public speaker, a success coach, and the radio show host of “Breaking Barriers” on community radio station 102.3 WHIV in New Orleans (“We Honor Independent Voices”). He has acted in feature films as well as on television. His new personal growth book, Breaking Barriers, released in June 2016. His followers look forward to his daily quotes, which are posted to his social media platforms. His weekly motivational blog posts every Monday and he hosts a weekly video series on YouTube called “Championship Minute,” which features a 60 second motivational message every Wednesday.

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, John lived his childhood as a troubled youth, making poor choices and traveling down a self-destructive path. He left New York in his early twenties, renouncing the power and temptations that a life of crime offered. He moved to Florida and, during one of the lowest moments in his life, spent a year living homeless on the streets, eating out of garbage cans.

John’s indomitable spirit prevailed and he eventually landed on his feet, creating a successful career in the auto industry. In 2015, he had an accident that left him legally blind. Through the healing process, John learned that although he lost his sight, he never lost his vision. Now, his attention has shifted to empowering youth and people with his personal message of being “constructive, not destructive,” and living a life of integrity, purpose, and passion.

Read and Take Flight

This year’s NCBD theme is Bumasa at Lumaya (Read and Take Flight).

When we read books, we take flight. Our imagination is set free. Our sense of wonder soars. Our ability to play around and think outside the box is activated. When we read, we can look at another person’s place in the world and discover that our humanity is mirrored in them. Our world view expands and we realize, despite our color, culture and creed, that we are not any different from each other at all.

To drum up this theme, volunteers are encouraged to:

  1. Post on their social media accounts (FB, Twitter, IG, Tumblr) photos of Filipino children’s books and/or Filipino YA books that
    1. Have set their imagination free
    2. Allowed their sense of wonder to soar
    3. Moved them to take a proactive action for one’s self and others too
    4. Encouraged and fostered play and recreation
    5. Expanded their world views
    6. Made them realize the importance of compassion, empathy and kindness
    7. Made them proud of their culture: regional and national
    8. Gave them an AHA moment (self knowledge or a solution to problems)

B. When posting, include the bibliographic data: title, author, illustrator, publisher, copyright

C. Set the posting this way:
Week 1 - This book sets my imagination free!
