Book Blog Tour: Sleeping With Dogs by Barbara Barth

Here is a dog rescue story I have not shared before.

A Rescue at Dusk

The sky was painted in shades of gold and lavender when Ouie first heard the whimper. It was faint, nearly drowned out by the hum of traffic and the rustling of leaves in the evening breeze. We had just finished our art activity, our hands still smudged with paint, when he stopped suddenly, his gaze fixed on the gutter near the curb.

A dog, its ribs visible beneath a patchy coat, its eyes a mix of fear and longing.

Ouie crouched down slowly, his heart already deciding before his mind could catch up. “Hey, little one,” he whispered, stretching out his hand, fingers grazing the air between them. The dog flinched but did not run. It only watched him, weighing its options, as if knowing this was a moment that could change everything.

I rummaged through my bag, finding a leftover sandwich from earlier. Breaking off a piece, I placed it on the pavement. The dog sniffed, inched forward, then took the smallest bite. A step closer. A breath held. A bond forming.

We found an old watercolor bowl from our art kit and filled it with water, placing it gently beside the dog. As we watched it lap up the water and finish the food we had given, we both let out quiet sighs of relief. Then, Ouie touched and caressed the dog gently on its head. I saw something shift in his eyes—a quiet kind of joy, the kind that comes from knowing you’ve done something good, something right.

We named him Lucky that night.

And in a way, perhaps, he rescued us too.

For more wonderful stories in poetry about dogs being rescued, pick up Barbara Barth's new book, Sleeping With Dogs.

I Say Thank You Book Blog Tour: A Review by Ali Co Calleja

From Ali Co Calleja's Facebook post:

As a parent and a lover of stories, this book hits the mark in so many ways! I Say Thank You! is the perfect book to read with my 2+ years old daughter, whom I hope to raise to become emotionally intelligent (never mind having all As!)
This book teaches young readers the importance of appreciating the little things and expressing gratitude openly. Beyond the valuable lessons, my daughter will surely enjoy the vibrant and adorable illustrations (especially the main character’s blue hair! Thinking of twinning with her someday!)
As my daughter grows up in an increasingly technological and connected world, helping her become more mindful and grateful from an early age is something I deeply care about. So, to the author and illustrator of this book, I say thank you! This is a beautiful, must-have picture book for parents and teachers to share with the little ones. Can't wait to have a physical copy of this book!
Thank you Zarah Gagatiga for the advance reading copy. ❤

Book Blog Tour 2024: A Book Preview for B.O.A.T

I will be participating in a new book blog tour by Women on Writing (WOW) this year. B.O.A.T is the book that I will be reading this week. The review will be up in March. Here is what the book is all about!

Seventeen-year-old April has spent her childhood in therapy, learning to dismiss her imaginary friends as just that: imaginary. Now, as a college freshman, she hopes to leave behind the whispers and cruel rumors that have plagued her for years.

When April begins to embrace her newfound independence, her world is turned upside down when she crosses paths with Tommy and Bobby, two figures her therapist insisted were figments of her imagination.

Nineteen-year-old Tommy has spent his life waiting for a mission that has haunted him. April’s reappearance shatters his reality, prompting him, April and Bobby to uncover a hidden truth that will change everything.

The trio must unite to fulfill their destiny. But an ominous force is closing in on them, one that will stop at nothing to prevent them from completing their mission. The stakes grow darker, threatening not only their lives but the wellbeing of future generations.

With time running out and the world’s fate hanging in the balance, fitting in will be the least of April’s concerns. She will need to confront the demons of her past and present, fighting for what she cherishes most.

Patricia Eckerman Ambas loves sharing stories - everything is a story waiting to be told! As a mom of three, bedtime and really, anytime-stories fill her world. She also shares stories with her community in Oshkosh, WI as she showcases the stories of her husband's family heritage while teaching guests at their family restaurant about Filipino food. Displaying beautiful multicultural families in her books' illustrations is at the forefront of her goals as an author in order to allow her own children, and others like them, a mirror of mixed families and a window for other children to see into a different lifestyle from their own. "I Can't Wait to Love You Forever" is her first children's book and she hopes you have as much fun with it as her second child had inventing the actual game played. Book Blog Tour 2023: Hope and Fortune

I am taking part in a Book Blog Tour of Hope and Fortune by WOW - Women on Writing. To know more about the book, read the short summary below and the information about the author, Marissa Bañez.

My review of Ms. Bañez's book will go live on February 8th in the blog so, do come back for it!

Hope and Fortune is a modern-day fairytale, featuring multicultural, multiracial (e.g., Filipina, African-American, Latina, Asian, Muslim, etc.), multigenerational, and multigender (including a boy) fairies of different shapes and sizes who help a sad little child who has lost her way to find her path.  Each fairy represents an ideal - Hope, Innocence and Wonder, Truth and Virtue, Generosity and Kindness, Strength and Courage, Respect and Dignity, Confidence, Imagination, Happiness, Beauty, Wisdom and Intelligence, and Love and Friendship. Although the protagonist is a little girl, the life advice given by the fairies is non-gender-specific and could resonate with anyone facing a difficult situation at any point in her/his/their life.

Book Blog Tour: Wing of the Locust Week 3

The Book Blog Tour for Wing of the Locust closes this week on its third roundup. Here is a review of the book bloggers and vloggers who participated in the blog tour. Click on each link to read up on their thoughts and responses on Wing of the Locust.

Book Blog Tour Introduction: Wing of the Locust

Week 1 - Book Blog Roundup

Week 2 - Book Blog Roundup

Wing of the Locust is a masterpiece on its own and as I have said in my review, a sequel is something readers are looking forward to. Also, this coming of age young adult novel has a place in book clubs and in the Language Arts classroom. I have recommended activities for school librarians and teachers who will pick this book up for their class or reading group.

Choose any of the 3 Pre-Reading Activities

1. Activate readers' prior knowledge by showing a pre-colonial map of the Philippines focusing on the province of Laguna, especially the town of Cabuyao. Compare this to a current map of Laguna. Ask students for their impressions, curiosities and questions about the two documents. Have students write these down in a common board or JamBoard. Make students choose three questions from the list and assign them to find out answers based on sources they find online or in the library. Be sure to require citations or a bibliography. Share findings next meeting.

2. Introduce the hierarchy of pre-colonial Philippines. Discuss the relevance of this social status during the time and how it is still present in modern day Philippines.

3. Build background knowledge on the mambabarang by having students do a close reading of a text about them.

During Reading - Try a Literary Circle with your readers. It is a collaborative reading response activity that provides agency among and between readers. I have put together useful links for resources and lesson plans on Literary Circle.

What is a Literature Circle?

 Literature Circles: Role Cards

Literature Circles: Lesson Plan

Post Reading Activity

1. Conduct an Author Visit.

2. Write a book review.

3. Do a book blog tour within the class or the reading group.

Feel free to try one, any of the recommended activities , or all of it! Have fun reading the Wing of the Locust and have more fun responding and engaging with other readers.

Book Blog Tour: Wing of the Locust Week 1 Roundup

Our Book Blog Tour for Wing of the Locust is on-going. Book bloggers are warming up to the book. The past week, our bloggers' socmed sites have been active about it! These are the initial responses they have on Joel Donato Ching Jacob's masterpiece.

Gerald the Bookworm book talks about Wing of the Locust and looks forward to finishing up the novel by the end of the year. Below is an IG post of Yna the Moodreader on IG.

Like Xi Zuq, I am currently reading the book and so far, it has been an interesting journey with Tuan who is continuously finding his place in the community. Set against the backdrop of pre-colonial Philippines, this gives color and texture to Tuan's discovery of the self and the world around him.

I will be posting full reviews and recommended activities in the coming weeks for Donato's engaging novel. It has a place in the classroom and in libraries for virtual book discussions. Exciting!
