DESCRIPTION
AND OBJECTIVE:
The People Power Revolution of
1986 took place on EDSA in the month of February. It was an age populated by
different political and religious personalities that turned the tide of
Philippine politics and social life. It has been 37 years since. Many things
have changed including the way we perceive and define heroes and heroism, villains and villainy and the characters and personalities that exist in
between the spectrums. It is but appropriate to revisit this place where heroes
and villains trod but from the lens of pop culture and literature, particularly
comic books, graphic novels and popular superhero movies and films. The goal is
to find parallels to the current political climate while exploring these
relevant but controversial issues in a safe space, though masked and mirrored through
art and literature.
For this purpose, the BA Library
is sponsoring a POP Talk on the aforementioned topics and goals. The BA Library
has invited Mr. Jamie Bautista to discuss the roles of heroes, villains and the
rendition of heroism in Hero Academia, in the characters of Batman and Loki
against the kinds of justice systems built around these worlds/universes.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jamie Bautista graduated cum laude
from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Communications, and has a
Masters in Entrepreneurship degree from the Asian Center for Entrepreneurship
and Asian Institute of Management. He
teaches classes at the Fine Arts Department at the Ateneo de Manila University
and has taught at The Beacon School, Assumption College, and Xavier
School. He is the owner of Nautilus
Graphic and Visual Designs, a small graphic design studio, and is the publisher
of Chamber Shell Publishing which published the National Book Award winning
Siglo: Freedom, Siglo: Passion, and The Mythology Class by Arnold Arre. He is the co-creator of the comic series Cast
and the National Book Award nominated all-ages detective comic series Private
Iris.

* The session is a creative way to revisit, or
even reframe ones’ assumptions and perceptions about heroes and villains and
the gray areas that exist between the two. This way, the listener or
participant is led to an awareness of himself/herself in light of
socio-political issues gleaned from a discussion of pop culture and literature.

* The
session provides an avenue to look at duality, differences as well as
commonalities. Such qualities are essential when we push for
ideas and activities that involve cooperation, coordination and collaboration.
Connection
* Fiction, pop culture
and literature mirror our realities.
